The Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan
Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic-year programs). Students attending programs at Japanese four-year universities may also be eligible for a supplementary monthly stipend from the Japanese government through the Association for International Education, Japan. Bridging Scholarships are offered twice a year.
Freeman Asia Awards for Study in Asia
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Applicants must participate in study abroad programs that are at least eight weeks in length. Applicants must currently receive financial aid or have verifiable need for financial assistance. No prior experience with Asia or study of Asian languages required.
The Blakemore Foundation
Since 1990, the Foundation has disbursed over $6.8 million in language grants. Blakemore Freeman Fellowships and Blakemore Refresher Grants are awarded to graduate students and professionals whose careers require fluency in an East or Southeast Asian language. Blakemore Fellows spend up to a year abroad in full-time intensive language study in programs such as the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama and the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing or study with private tutors for languages such as Burmese, Hmong, and Balinese.
Pretzer Study Abroad Scholarship
The Pretzer Study Abroad Scholarship is an award aiming to assist students applying to study abroad in China during the Academic year, for a Fall semester, or during the Summer 1 term as part of the 5-week program. In particular, this award would support students with an interest in studying Chinese language and culture. Students will be able to apply for this scholarship as part of their study abroad application.
