~LARRY THOMAS~
OYSTER
Fastened to a barnacled reef
buffed for decades
by the snail-paced,
shoeshine rag of the tide,
you brandish your jagged shell
in shallow, brackish water
dully suffused with moonglow.
You live your whole life this way,
struggling for nothing,
an icon of fixity,
your sole labor
the occasional parting
of your shell to glut yourself
on an everlasting,
sumptuous banquet
served by a suave current.
