LISTENING
FOR ANSWERS
Sound carries so far in February.
The wind rings chimes, and shakes
bare boughs answering for birds.
Cottonwood leaf on frozen mud,
as if all life died in winter.
The wind rings chimes, and shakes
our courage. But still we go on
the way the path leads, deeper,
always farther from the road.
We speak in whispers, not afraid
but shy of how silence listens
the way the path leads, deeper
than we’ve thought to go before.
There are human words for this.
But shy of how silence listens,
we avoid human words for this
kind of courage, of going on.
Sound carries so far in February,
bare boughs answering for birds.
