THE ROOM AND THE WINDOW
…he breathed on them…
John 20:22
A warm breeze, soft gusts bringing the scent
of hibiscus and bread baked on the morning fire.
Close and humid, bodily, the room heavy
with the smell of a night’s sleep,
a faint lingering a foot outside the door.
Then, a somersault of current and wisp stirs
the loose linen, tosses hair from creased brows,
lifts through the high window, and never stops.
John Moessner is the author of Harmonia (Stephen F. Austin State University Press, 2023). He received his MFA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His work has appeared in New Letters, North American Review, and Poet Lore.
