Valparaiso University Presents Second Annual Dialogue and Discernment Event

Features screening of documentary “Bring it to the Table”

Valparaiso University will host “Bring it to the Table,” a documentary film screening and discussion with Emmy-nominated director Julie Winokur for its second annual Dialogue and Discernment event on Thursday, April 6.

The Dialogue and Discernment series intends to expose the community to different strategies of civil dialogue around divisive issues. Focusing on the topic “Bridging the Divide over Women’s Reproductive Rights,” this year’s event brings to campus filmmaker Julie Winokur, who travels to diverse communities across the country and asks people to sit down and speak candidly about their political beliefs and commitments in a non-confrontational setting.

“Bring it to The Table” is a documentary film and community engagement campaign aimed at engaging students in civic action and empowering them to take an active role in breaking down hyper-partisanship. Talking Eyes Media (TEM) launched “Bring it to The Table” to reclaim the rightful place of healthy discourse by encouraging people to listen to each other and collaboratively move toward action.

The “Bring it to The Table” documentary film is one component of the interactive campaign. The screening will be followed by a table talk with Winokur, featuring interactive dialogue with selected members of the audience who will be encouraged to explore their own belief systems while listening to the complex reasoning behind their fellow citizens’ ideas.

“Bring it to the Table” begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the Helge Center, adjacent to the Chapel of the Resurrection. The event is free and open to the public.
