Valpo Music Department Announces 2016–2017 Season

The music department at Valparaiso University presents the 2016–2017 performance schedule, which showcases the talents of students, faculty and visiting performers.

Season highlights:

  • Homecoming Symphony Orchestra Concert, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection. Conductor Dennis Friesen-Carper will lead the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra, featuring alumna violinist Megan Van Gomple ’01. The public is invited to perform Brahms’ “Academic Festival Overture” with the Symphony Orchestra for the finale.
  • Family Weekend Concerts, Oct. 7–8. The Ulysses Quartet, which won the gold medal in the 2016 Fischoff Competition, will perform Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts, Duesenberg Recital Hall. The Chorale, Women’s Choir, and Men’s Ensemble will perform a choral concert Saturday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m in the Chapel of the Resurrection.
  • 8th Annual Great Lakes Music Festival, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection. Performers include the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University, the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra, visiting high school orchestras and international guest artists.
  • Christmas Concert — A Carol Festival, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 3 at 5 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection. The annual celebration features the Chorale, Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, Chamber Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra.
  • Advent–Christmas Vespers, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection. An annual service featuring the Kantorei and handbell choirs of the Chapel.
  • Symphony Orchestra Concert, Feb. 18, 2017 at 7:30 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection The concerto competition student winners join the University Symphony for solo performances. Auditions will be held in October.
  • Jazz Festival, April 3–8, 2017. Performance information will be announced in the spring.
  • Sousa Concert, May 6, 2017 at 1 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection. An annual tribute to legendary composer John Philip Sousa.
