Valparaiso University Appoints Director of Human Resources

Valparaiso University has named Scott R. Harrison, J.D., as director of human resource services. Harrison comes to Valpo from the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he served as director of human resources.

In his role as director, Harrison reports to the vice president for administration and will be responsible for the administration of policies and programs governing employment, employee relations, compensation and benefits, and employee development and training, working in close cooperation with the deans, department supervisors, human resources staff, and the special assistant to the provost for inclusion.

“Scott will serve as a valuable addition to the human resources team,” said Susan Scroggins, vice president for administration. “His expertise will help the office continue the good work that it has already accomplished, and he will play an integral role in enhancing the University’s reputation as an exceptional workplace that is sensitive to diversity, inclusivity, and the needs of its employees.”

In his previous role at Cooley Law School, Harrison served as the principal diversity leader and was the primary architect for the school’s domestic partner benefits program. In addition, Harrison was the staff disabilities officer and advised the school regarding Title IX compliance.  Harrison’s expertise with diversity concerns will prove vital to his new role, and with his leadership, the University will continue on a path toward greater inclusivity.

“I am very excited to join the special community that is Valparaiso University,” Harrison said. “I welcome the challenges naturally coming with the HR function as opportunities to contribute both to Valpo’s mission and to the work lives of its employees.”

As Valparaiso University seeks to attract talented candidates and provide exceptional continuing education and top-notch benefits, Harrison will provide crucial oversight in the evaluation of current human resource systems and processes. He will initiate and oversee the creation of new programs that will improve services to all, working hand in hand across various departments to do so.

Harrison holds a juris doctorate from Western Michigan University and a bachelor of arts in communication from Michigan State University. He has presented and published in areas related to human resource management in higher education. Harrison is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management and the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources. In addition, he is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
