Valparaiso University Hosts Conference for Lutheran Musicians

Valparaiso University hosts the biennial conference of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians June 30 through July 3. This year’s conference will focus on the theme “God is here: Worship in a wireless world.”

All worship services are open to the public and free of charge. Tickets for Monday’s hymn festival and Wednesday’s organ recital are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students.

Highlights of the conference include:

  • Opening Eucharist with Martin Jean, organ, University Pastor James Wetzstein presiding; Sunday, June 30, 7:30 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection
  • Hymn festival with David Cherwien and the National Lutheran Choir; Monday, July 1, 7:30 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection
  • Bach Cantata Vespers with the Valparaiso University Bach Institute; Tuesday, July 2, 7:30 p.m., Chapel of the Resurrection
  • Organ recital by Martin Jean; Wednesday, July 3, 11:40 a.m., Chapel of the Resurrection

Valparaiso University faculty members Dennis Friesen-Carper, Joseph Bognar, and John Bernthal will also present workshops throughout the conference.<

The National Lutheran Choir hymn festival will feature Gregorian chant and Medieval hymns as well as contemporary works, including the 2013 Raabe prize-winning composition, Nada Te Turbe, by Jake Runestad. The program will also incorporate readings, reflections, congregational singing, and movement throughout the performance space.

The Association of Lutheran Church Musicians is a service and professional organization dedicated to strengthening the ministry of worship and music in the Lutheran church. Founded in 1985, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians currently holds its national offices on Valparaiso University’s campus. The University previous hosted the conference in 1997.
