Indiana Senator visits Valpo

Nearly 200 community and university leaders and Valparaiso residents gathered in the Harre Union on Aug. 29 as Sen. Richard Lugar discussed current events and Indiana’s involvement in the nation’s economic growth. Valparaiso’s Chamber of Commerce presented the luncheon to inform community leaders on how Indiana is contributing to the national economy.

“Let me say some good news: Indiana agriculture is strong,” Lugar said. “As one of the top wheat and corn growers in the United States, Indiana continues to produce a vast amount of goods to export, helping create jobs and stability in our times of need.”

Lugar, a Republican who is the state’s senior U.S. senator, focused on the link between agriculture and job opportunities as a key to the nation’s economic success, noting that farmers across the United States are producing more goods to benefit our country as well as in international trade.

“Indiana farmers are contributing to trade efforts and helping feed our nation and the world one field at a time,” Lugar said. “As a soy farmer myself – one of two in the Senate – I appreciate that.

The audience included Valparaiso University President Mark Heckler, state sen. Ed Charbonneau, state rep. Ed Soliday, and Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas.
