Valpo Administrator Advocates for Excellence in Fraternity and Sorority Life

Oct. 21, 2021 – Valparaiso, Indiana – Carolyn Whittier, Ph.D., assistant vice president for student life at Valparaiso University, recently co-authored a report published by NASPA, the leading association for student affairs professionals in higher education, on excellence in fraternity and sorority life. The report is part of a larger initiative by the organization to improve the ways in which fraternities and sororities are supported, challenged and elevated.

The report is a handbook and guide for practitioners in developing high-quality fraternity and sorority life experiences on campus for students.

“Assistant Vice President Whittier continues to be a national leader in this subject area,” said Vice President for Student Life Steven Janowiak. “We are very proud of her contributions and impact, and how she continues to display Valpo’s excellence to the outside world through her work.”

Whittier joined Valparaiso University in 2012 and has been instrumental in growing the award-winning fraternity and sorority community at Valpo. Each chapter recognizes local and national organizations in need of aid and donates funds through philanthropic service projects. In 2019–2020, fraternity and sorority community members dedicated 18,950 hours to service, helping the members strengthen the humility and empathy necessary to become thoughtful and values-driven individuals.

The fraternity and sorority community at Valpo regularly receives national recognition, including Panhellenic Council Excellence Awards from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values each year since 2014, the Gamma Sigma Alpha Academic Award for All-Greek GPA each year since 2014, Interfraternity Council Excellence Awards from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values each year since 2015 and the National Panhellenic Conference Excellence Award since 2018.
