Internships This Summer – Indianaintern.net recently posted over 1,000 internships for this summer! Indiana Intern is an internship matching service that helps connect Indiana-based employers with students. If your prior summer plans fell through, spend some time checking out their newest listings of both in-person and remote opportunities.

The Career Center reports that 75% of Valpo students secure their internships and first full-time jobs through contacts, referrals, previous employers, alumni, and leads through the Career Center. Create your profile and start connecting with Valpo alumni on Valpo’s Alumni Career Network (ValpoConnect, powered by Wisr). If you have a LinkedIn profile, it’s even easier to connect to ValpoConnect.

General Announcements

Remember To Do Health Insurance Waiver – If you do not wish to be on the university-sponsored health insurance this coming school year because you have affordable care act compliant health insurance from another source, remember to complete the online Health Insurance Waiver before August! This needs to be done every summer if you do not want to be on the university-sponsored student health insurance. If you don’t do the waiver, you will be charged for the health insurance on your Fall bill and you will be covered under the university plan for the year. All the details are online here.

Spring 2020 Lighter Online Now – The Spring 2020 issue of The Lighter literary magazine is now online here. Check it out!

Congratulations Athletes! Athletics is unveiling this year’s ARC award winners on Instagram. Congratulations to all student athletes on your great accomplishments this year!

Congratulations OMP Award winners! Check out the listing of Multicultural Programs’ award winners here. Thanks for your awesome programming and support of Valpo students this year!

Congratulations to the winners of the Isolated Art contest highlighted on The Lighter’s Instagram feed.

Traditions of Giving Class Awards Grants — Valpo students continue to serve and give virtually! Watch the virtual ceremony of ENGL 296/695’s, “Traditions of Giving & Serving in America”  class as they award area organizations the Learning By Giving Foundation grant.

Celebrating Engineering Senior Design Projects — Congratulations to all the bioengineering, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering seniors who just completed their senior design projects! Take a virtual tour of the projects here.

Library Book/Material Returns — If you are trying to return books/material to the Christopher Center, there is a Book Return next to the 1st floor door (Chapel side, down the steps). The Book Return is a silver-framed box with a handle on the brick wall.

State of Indiana Phased Reopening — Governor Holcomb announced last Friday the plan for Indiana’s phased re-opening. You can see the details of the plan here. Porter County (where Valpo is located), moved into re-opening Stage 2 starting Monday (May 4). Stage 2 means it is recommended to wear face masks when in public, gatherings must be 25 or less people, and business that re-open can only operate at 50% capacity. On campus, almost all faculty and staff have been told to continue working from home as the university creates its own phased reopening plan.

Bookstore Rental Returns – The Bookstore in the Harre Union is now open 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mondays — Saturdays to accept rental returns. Follett, the company that operates the Bookstore, has also announced that anyone who rented materials is being offered free shipping to return materials by mail. The information regarding how to get the shipping label, along with a reminder of when materials are due, goes to the email you entered when you originally rented materials. Additional information is online here.

Move-Out Details — Phased move-out of residence halls/apartments continues through May 21. Questions should be directed to reslife@valpo.edu.

Federal CARES Act Grants for Students — Federal CARES Act Grants will be distributed to eligible students by May 15. The guidelines for who is eligible for the grants were set by the federal government. You can read more about the grants and how they’ll be distributed in the email from COO David Phelps.

University Grants for International Students — The federal government left international students out of the eligibility for the Federal CARES Act Grants for Students. Because of this, the University has created a grant fund for international students with financial need. This was described in the same email from COO David Phelps. Students who want to apply for these grant funds can do so online here. Questions should be directed to byron.martin@valpo.edu.

Room, Board, and Parking Credits – The email from COO David Phelps (April 29) said these credits will be calculated and applied to student accounts one-by-one because they are based on how much of your room, meal plan, and/or parking were paid for by financial aid versus paid by you. Credits will be posted to your individual student accounts over the next 30-45 days. If you owe a balance on your student account, the credit will help pay down that balance. If your student account is paid in full, then you can either request a refund on your student account or leave the credit on your account to help pay for next semester.

Diplomas For Graduating Students – The Registrar’s Office has announced that diplomas will be printed for May graduates in June as usual. In order to get their diploma, students provide a mailing address for delivery on DataVU – Students Menu – Diploma Request. Students also need to make sure their DataVU Student Restrictions are completely cleared in order for their diploma to be released. To learn more about graduation and diplomas at Valpo, see this Registrar site.

Cap & Gown For Graduating Students – Graduation regalia (cap & gown) is available for graduating students to purchase via the Bookstore website. Students who had already reserved regalia still go to the website to process their order and pay for it. All shipping charges are waived and will not be included in the final charge when the order is processed for shipment. More details are online here.

Summer Financial Aid – If you are taking 6 or more Valpo class credits this summer, be sure to submit the summer financial aid application. Your school-year financial aid award doesn’t carry over into the summer so remember to submit the form if you want to be considered for financial aid for Valpo summer classes. Additional summer class information is online here.

Telehealth With Student Insurance – If you are on the university-sponsored United HealthCare insurance, you now have the option of using telehealth at no cost on go.healthiestyou.com/student. There is a video on the site that explains more about how telehealth works. Students who are not currently on the university-sponsored health insurance can utilize this service for $40 per consultation or check with your insurance company to see if they offer a similar product.
