·         Go through and organize your email inbox: Delete what you no longer need, respond to whatever needs response, “label” (file) whatever you want to save but don’t need right now.

Career Prep 

Men’s Basketball Hiring Managers for 2020–21 — Managers get valuable hands-on experience in collegiate athletics, working with coaches, players, support staff and administration. The position offers real-world experience for any student interested in careers in sports administration, coaching or a related field. Office and Transportation Driver Positions Available for 2020–21 — Applications are now being accepted for the OneCard, Parking and Transportation Office’s Customer Service Associate position, which assists in office daily operations. The office is also now hiring Student Transportation Drivers to drive the campus shuttle. The job descriptions and application links are on Handshake – Jobs – On-Campus. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. April 30.

If your prior summer plans fell through, spend some time checking out their newest listings of both in-person and remote opportunities.  


General Announcements 

Move-Out Details — Residential Life sent move out information via email yesterday (April 21). If you have belongings on campus, be sure to read through that information and follow the instructions. Questions should be directed to reslife@valpo.edu.

 

Bookstore Textbook Returns — The university is working with Follett, the company that runs the Valpo Bookstore, to determine procedures for doing textbook rental returns and/or book buy-backs. When the information is solidified, it will be communicated to students. Watch your email for the info.

 

College Mentors for Kids Seeking Leaders — College Mentors is an organization that pairs current Valpo students with local elementary-aged kids. The kids come to campus each week during the school year to participate in fun events with their college mentors. College Mentors needs leaders for several areas for 2020-21 including Treasurers, Activities Directors, General Managers, Engagement Managers, Fundraising Directors. Free Mental Health Screening — The One-of-Us Initiative at Valparaiso University is hosting free virtual mental health screening for all Valpo students from Wednesday (April 22) to Monday (April 27). This anonymous screening provides info about current mental health status. Following completion of the screening questions, a list of campus and community mental health resources will be provided. If you are unable to access this list or decide to not complete the screening, you can obtain a copy of the mental health resource sheet by emailing michelle.bulington@valpo.edu. Online screening tools are a quick snapshot of your mental health status. If you would like to share the results of this screening with someone, a mental health provider can give you a full assessment and talk to you about treatment options. The Valparaiso University Counseling Center can be contacted via email if you would like to schedule an appointment (counseling.center@valpo.edu).

 

Dance Marathon Seeks Leadership Team Members — If you want to be part of carrying out 2021 Dance Marathon for the kids of Lurie Children’s Hospital, be sure to apply for leadership team by 5 p.m. Friday, May 1. Shanghai Jewish Refugee Interview and Radio Play — Students in this spring’s historical theatre class invite everyone to virtually join their two upcoming events. The first event is a Facebook Live interview with WWII Shanghai Jewish refugee survivor Gary Sternberg this Tuesday (April 28) at 10:30 a.m. Sternberg will share stories of his escape from  the Holocaust to Shanghai, China. The second event is a radio play call The Singer of Shanghai, written by students in the class for their final project and based on interviews with survivors. The play can be viewed on the class YouTube channel beginning Tuesday afternoon, May 12. The Shanghai Jewish refugees’ stories of perseverance, resilience, and hope provide a positive message during these uncertain times. Questions? Email Christian.Yoder@valpo.edu.

 

Telehealth With Student Insurance — If you are on the university-sponsored United HealthCare insurance, you now have the option of using telehealth at no cost on go.healthiestyou.com/student. There is a video on the site that explains more about how telehealth works. Students who are not currently on the university-sponsored health insurance can utilize this service for $40 per consultation or check with your insurance company to see if they offer a similar product.   

 

Need a Cultural Diversity Course? Check out this Fall 2020 course: EAST 340: China Uncensored: An Exploratory Course (Mondays 6:30 – 9:00). Learn about the everyday lives and concerns of regular Chinese citizens, as well as explore and analyze a cultural product of your choosing (literature, film, art, theater, internet culture, video games). This class is project based and has no prerequisites. It is open to students of all disciplines who are interested in learning more about China.
