Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces 2018–2019 Season
Opening Reception is Sept. 7
The 2018–2019 season at the Brauer Museum of Art kicks off with an opening reception Friday, Sept. 7, featuring works in a variety of media ranging from abstract to representational.
The fall exhibitions run through Dec. 9 and feature a collection of photographs by David Robert Austen covering nearly two decades spent in Australia. For more than 40 years, Austen has been assigned work by the publishers of books, magazines and newspapers around the world. His work was featured in the National Geographic Television documentary “The Photographers” and appears in “Ten Thousand Eyes,” a Kodak-sponsored book and international traveling exhibition commemorating 150 years of photography.
Austen’s exhibition is accompanied by a full-color book available at the Brauer Museum for $30. Special guests at the Sept. 7 opening reception include Australia’s Consul-General in Chicago, Matthew Wise, and Valparaiso University President Mark Heckler.
A special preview of Austen’s exhibition will be available Thursday, Sept. 6, following a piano recital by Justin Kolb in the lobby of the Center for the Arts at noon. The recital is free and open to the public and will feature some songs related to Australia.
In addition to Austen’s photographs, the Brauer presents the exhibition “Krista Steinke: Good Luck with the Sun and other works.” A Valpo alumna, Krista Steinke ’90 works in photography, video and installation. Her work explores the human-environmental relationship and photography’s role in mediating that experience.
To accompany these exhibitions, the Brauer will host a gallery talk in conjunction with the Christ College Symposium with Krista Steinke on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m., as well as a coffee hour with David Austen on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. These events are free and open to the public.
In the spring semester, the film/lecture series, “The Noir Style in Image, Word and Sound” returns to offer film screenings and discussions that will explore the classic film genre. Four iconic movies will be featured by Indiana University Northwest Performing Arts faculty member and creator of the lecture series, Peter Aglinskas. All events are free and open to the public, with showings running January–April.
The winter exhibitions debut Jan. 8 with “Line/Force/Burn Rubber: Sarah Krepp & Olivia Petrides,” “The Art of Lynn Olson” and “The Icons on Ammo Boxes: Art by Sofia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko.”
The Valparaiso University Juried Art Student Exhibition returns in April, featuring original artwork by Valpo students. The summer exhibitions include new acquisitions, selections from the permanent collection and “Corey Hagelberg: No Beauty in This.”
