Illuminating the Path: Valparaiso University’s Resurrection Labyrinth and the Spirit of Valpo Day

Just beyond the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University lies a sacred space often overlooked – a 64-foot-diameter prayer labyrinth designed for reflection, meditation, and spiritual renewal. Constructed in 2005, the Resurrection Labyrinth is more than just a pathway: it symbolizes Valparaiso University’s goal of guiding individuals on their personal and collective journeys of faith, passion, and community. As Valpo Day – a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting the University’s mission – approaches, the Resurrection Labyrinth stands as a poignant emblem of what it means to be a torchbearer in Valpo’s community.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol representing wholeness, combining the imagery of a circle and a spiral into a purposeful path. Unlike a maze, which is designed to confuse with multiple paths and dead ends, a labyrinth has a single, unambiguous route to the center and back out again. Walking the labyrinth is a metaphor for life’s journey – a path that is not always straightforward but requires trust in the process. As individuals walk its winding course, they are invited to release the distractions of daily life, receive divine guidance at the center, and return to the world, grounded and renewed. Valpo alumnus and author Travis Scholl ’96, M.Div., Ph.D., describes the path by stating, “To walk into the vocare of the labyrinth is to open our eyes to the wondrous gift of this path of a day, of the way one fleeting moment can break into timeless epiphany. To this, and for this moment, I have been called.”

Given to the glory of God in memory of Nicole Unrath ’03 after she passed from a car accident in September of 2003, the Resurrection Labyrinth symbolizes Nicole’s devotion to God and her desire to spread the gospel, which is highlighted in her favorite saying, “Smile big because God loves you, and so do I.” Nicole was an elementary education student and a Christ College – The Honors College associate at Valpo. During her sophomore year, the Chapel featured a canvas labyrinth. Nicole and many others found walking the labyrinth uplifting, inspiring the creation of this memorial to honor her radiant faith and deep passion for Valpo. The labyrinth becomes a focal point on Valpo Day, symbolizing the community’s shared path and the light that guides each member. Walking the labyrinth mirrors the path of a torchbearer – those who support Valpo through their time, talents, and treasures – illuminating the way for others, radiating generosity, and brightening futures with a clear path in mind. This alignment underscores the labyrinth’s significance in reinforcing Valpo’s promise and the spirit of Valpo Day.

Valparaiso University will transform the labyrinth into a shining display on Valpo Day by placing candles along its paths. As dusk falls, the labyrinth will glow, symbolizing the light each torchbearer brings to the community. This illumination serves as a visual representation of how individual contributions – whether through donations, acts of service, or expressions of support – collectively brighten the future of Valpo and its members. The candlelit labyrinth invites participants to reflect on their journeys and the impact of their support. As they walk the illuminated path, they are reminded of the University’s commitment and their role in carrying its light forward.

Torchbearers play a crucial role in shaping the experiences of students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Financial contributions directly impact scholarships, faculty development, and programs that prepare students to make a difference in the world, radiating far beyond Valpo’s campus. In addition to financial support, torchbearers contribute to a culture of service and leadership. Their involvement in mentoring, volunteering, and advocating for the University enriches the Valpo experience and extends its reach. Each act of support, regardless of size, adds to the collective light guiding the University toward a brighter future.

On April 9, 2025, let us celebrate Valpo Day and embrace the journey together. Let us follow the labyrinth’s winding path and be reminded that we are never alone. Let us walk alongside a community of torchbearers who uplift, support, and illuminate the way for others. Let us be grounded in our purpose, radiate kindness and generosity, and shine a light that reaches beyond our own steps. Every contribution, every moment of reflection, and every act of support fuels the future of Valpo and the lives it touches. As the labyrinth glows with candlelight at the close of Valpo Day, may it serve as a beacon of gratitude and hope – a reminder that when we walk together, our light shines even brighter.
