Valparaiso University to Present “Anastasia” the Musical

Valparaiso University’s Department of Theatre will bring the enchanting story of “Anastasia” to the stage this spring, offering audiences an opportunity to experience a tale of adventure, identity, and perseverance in musical form. Under the direction of Keri Burman Castro, M.A., with musical direction by Daniel Evan Castro, this production features a talented cast and creative team dedicated to bringing this beloved musical to life.

Performances will take place at the University Theatre in the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts, beginning Thursday, April 3, at 8 p.m., with additional performances on Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m. The production runs approximately two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.

Based on the animated film by Tony Award winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, and adapted for the stage, “Anastasia” follows a young woman searching for her past, set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary Russia and 1920s Paris. Along the way, she finds herself pursued by a Soviet officer while forming unexpected alliances with a dashing con man and an ex-aristocrat. Featuring a sweeping musical score and visually stunning design, the production captures the magic and emotion of Anya’s journey.

“At its core, Anastasia is a beautiful story about discovery, survival, and love against all odds,” Castro said. “The public should come see it not only because it’s a compelling production, but also because supporting the arts — especially theatre at Valpo — is crucial. Fostering a strong arts culture is vital for students as they shape their futures. Beyond that, the production itself is visually stunning and will be a true treat for anyone who attends.”

The cast features Victoria Tiller ’25 as Anya, Aidan Andrade ’27 as Dmitry, Chris Marlow ’27 as Vlad, and Daniel Mietz ’26 as Gleb, with Rachel Painter ’25 as stage manager. Andrew Gutshall, MFA, technical director, has led the production team in crafting an immersive experience, complete with intricate set designs and period costumes.

“So much hard work and dedication has gone into it. The set build is very ambitious with a lot of moving parts. The actors have put long hours into learning the choreography, lines, and music. Going to see it is supporting all the hard work that went into it,” said Rachel Painter ’25.

Beyond its artistic appeal, “Anastasia” is a story of resilience, love, and self-discovery that continues to resonate with audiences. This is a production that speaks to finding one’s place in the world and we hope the Valpo community and beyond will join us in celebrating live theatre and enjoying this captivating show.
