Inspired by Creativity, Recognized for Excellence | Jacqueline Rios’ ’27 Valpo Journey

Imagine stepping onto a college campus for the first time, expecting to feel out of place, yet discovering a sense of belonging. For Jacqueline Rios ’27, that moment at Valparaiso University was the beginning of a journey that would grow her passions, deepen her connections, and illuminate the path to her future.

Now a sophomore studying digital media arts and minoring in art, Jacqueline’s hard work and involvement recently earned her the prestigious Realizing the Dream Scholarship. This award, presented to first-generation college students who excel academically and make a meaningful impact on their campuses, came as a welcome surprise. “I didn’t even apply for it — I was nominated! [Assistant Dean of Students] Noelle Pease, M.S., who informed me about it, told me it was a no-brainer to select me. That just feels like such an honor,” she says. Receiving this scholarship has deepened Jacqueline’s gratitude for the opportunities Valpo has given her. “It’s really meaningful to know that my efforts are being recognized. It motivates me to keep going.”

As a first-generation student from East Chicago, Indiana, Jacqueline says, “The hardest part was not having anyone at home to guide me. Before I found out about programs like Cornerstone, I thought I would have to figure everything out myself. But the counseling services here and the friends I’ve made have been a huge help.”

Jacqueline found Valpo’s small, tight-knit community exactly what she was searching for. “I liked that it was a small campus, and I’d have the opportunity to connect with professors and students more. It’s easier to build relationships when you see the same people in more than one class,” she explains. Those connections quickly extended to the digital media arts program, where her passion for creativity came to life. “Graphic design and art give me an outlet to express myself and Valpo has given me the tools to explore my talents,” she shares, highlighting professors like Lucas Kelley, M.A., Ph.D., assistant professor of history, and Sarah Jantzi, MFA, associate professor of art. “They’re always willing to help, even outside the classroom. [Professor] Jantzi has such a calming presence — it’s so easy to talk to her.”

Outside the classroom, Jacqueline has embraced Valpo’s community spirit through service and involvement. From attending LatinX in Valparaiso for Excellence (L.I.V.E.) events to helping with Valpo’s annual haunted house, her schedule is full of meaningful activities. “I also went on a service trip to Virginia last March. We helped with home repairs after floods for people who couldn’t afford them. It was such an interesting experience,” she says. “Seeing the tight-knit community there was eye-opening.” It was through coming to Valpo and the freedom she found here within our community that Jacqueline began exploring her faith. “I joined a Bible study at St. Teresa’s to learn more about my faith. I feel like coming here was part of a bigger plan — like a lot of things just fell into place, and I’m really grateful for that,” she reflects.

Looking ahead, Jacqueline dreams of becoming a character designer or concept artist for video games. “My backup plan is to work as a graphic designer, maybe freelance or for a company. The internships Valpo offers can help me gain experience and build confidence, so by the time I graduate, I’ll be ready to say, ‘Here’s my resume, I’m ready to help you.’”

Her advice to prospective students? “Just keep attending events and putting yourself out there. People will notice, and you’ll start to make connections. And don’t be afraid to ask questions — whether it’s about assignments or your career path. Professors here know so much beyond just teaching, and they’re always willing to share that knowledge,” she exclaims.

Jacqueline’s story shines as an example of how Valpo fosters creativity, connection, and confidence in its students, empowering them to radiate their light wherever they go. If you are inspired by her journey, begin your own by exploring all the digital media arts program has to offer.
