Valparaiso University Bioengineering and Environmental Engineering Programs Receive Accreditation

Bioengineering

Valparaiso University’s bachelor’s degree programs in bioengineering and environmental engineering have been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. These new offerings are a part of Valparaiso University’s dedication to learning and to offering programs that ready future servant-leaders for growing fields in the rapidly changing professional and academic landscape.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“We’re very pleased that both Bioengineering and Environmental Engineering have been accredited by ABET, ensuring that those programs maintain the highest level of quality,” said Doug Tougaw, Ph.D., M.E., dean of the Valparaiso University College of Engineering.  “Earning an ABET-accredited degree from any of our six programs will help our graduates to pursue professional licensure and graduate school admission, allowing them to achieve all of their professional goals.”

Environmental Engineering students will focus on using their knowledge of chemistry and biology to improve the quality of air, soil, and water, taking advantage of the University’s proximity to Lake Michigan to offer hands-on experience. Bioengineering combines engineering and physiology, teaching students to improve lives by working with the human body.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Environmental Engineering

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,564 programs at 895 colleges and universities in 40 countries and areas.
