A Balanced Life Leading to Bright Outcomes for Nadia Paul ’25 DNP, MSN, ACNP-BC, FHM
Nadia Paul’s ’25 DNP, MSN, ACNP-BC, FHM, journey to Valparaiso University’s doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program began unexpectedly. “I was interviewing a candidate for a nurse practitioner position, and I noticed she had graduated from Valpo’s bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) to DNP program. She was very prepared both clinically and professionally,” Nadia recalls. This serendipitous encounter sparked Nadia’s interest in Valpo, leading her to explore our offerings further.
Valpo’s asynchronous coursework was a significant draw. “The flexibility has been phenomenal,” Nadia enthuses. Whether on a cruise or during a family vacation, she could keep up with her studies, thanks to the program’s accommodating structure. This adaptability was crucial for Nadia, allowing her to integrate her education seamlessly into her busy life.
Nadia’s decision to pursue her education at Valpo was deeply influenced by her desire to maintain a balance between her demanding professional role and her family life — a balance Valpo values, too. As the director of advanced practice for Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Inc., one of Indiana’s largest healthcare systems, overseeing 110 advanced practice providers, she couldn’t afford to step back from her career. Additionally, as a mother of two young children, Nadia was determined to be present for her family. “I made the commitment to my family that I was going to do the coursework in the evenings or early mornings. Valparaiso [University] allowed me that flexibility,” she shares.
Nadia’s experience with the DNP program has been overwhelmingly positive. “The professors have been super supportive and engaged. They definitely partner with me to ensure I succeed,” she notes. This support extended to allowing her to work ahead when necessary, ensuring she never missed important family moments or professional responsibilities.
Reflecting on her educational journey, Nadia appreciates the comprehensive experience Valpo has provided. “I wanted a broad experience, having attended different universities for my BSN and [master of science in nursing] MSN. Valpo was the perfect choice for my terminal degree,” she explains. The program has not only enhanced her clinical knowledge but also significantly bolstered her leadership skills, offering a unique value inherent to Valpo. “I have always been drawn to both helping individuals and also to leadership. I have been fortunate in my career to balance both. I’m able to still take care of patients one day a week and I’m able to lead over 100 advanced practice providers. This program has helped move my career forward because it has allowed me to focus on developing as a leader and start asking the right questions so I can better serve my teams. The impact that I’m making in their careers and the patients that they touch is hopefully going to multiply throughout the state.”
Nadia’s ability to balance a full-time career, family, and rigorous academic demands speaks volumes about her determination and Valpo’s commitment to producing graduates who excel personally and professionally. “If my kids ever look back, I hope they remember that mom was present and balanced everything successfully,” she reflects with pride.
Through dedication and the supportive environment at Valpo, Nadia has not only achieved her academic goals but also set a shining example of how a balanced life can lead to bright outcomes. For those contemplating a similar path, Nadia’s advice is clear: “Go for it! The experience at Valparaiso University has been wonderful. You won’t be disappointed.”
