Outcomes in Action: Anthony Luciano ’22 Illuminates Pathways for Future Beacons

In the welcoming and supportive atmosphere of Valpo, accounting and finance double-major Anthony Luciano ’22 found his journey beginning with an innate sense of belonging. “When I came to Valpo, there was an inclusive, friendly environment that made me feel welcomed,” he recalls. Although Anthony grew up Catholic, Valpo’s inclusive ethos extended beyond the spiritual, fostering a community where every student could thrive and shine.

And thrive he did! Reflecting on his time at Valpo, Anthony recounts how Valpo’s unique atmosphere played a pivotal role in building his confidence and ambition, shaping him into a beacon of personal and professional growth.

“I credit all of my experiences in the many clubs and organizations I was involved in for preparing me for my internship [and career at PepsiCo]. My time as vice president of operations, and then president, of Valpo’s Interfraternity Governing Council helped me in practical and applicable ways. I learned the skills most people don’t until they are already in the workforce: professional communication, meeting deadlines, leading meetings and breakout groups, public speaking, time management, uniting a community of different yet like-minded individuals, and being a humble and transparent leader,” he recounts.

Recalling countless opportunities where he was encouraged to engage with leadership without fear, Anthony shares that Valpo’s unique culture instilled in him a sense of humility and openness, crucial traits in professional and personal growth. “Valpo taught me to respect authority but also to see everyone as people. You can talk to anyone, from directors to the president, without feeling intimidated,” he explains.

Marked by meaningful connections and leadership opportunities, Anthony’s involvement in various clubs and activities not only enriched his college life but also laid the foundation for a robust professional network. “Every business needs an accountant or a finance professional, so networking across different fields has been incredibly beneficial,” Anthony notes. This extensive network, built during his Valpo days, continues to support his career progression and open doors to new opportunities — for both himself and other bright Beacons following a similar path.

“When I was a junior, I did mock interviews through the Career Center and met a director at PepsiCo. That connection led to an internship, which then led to a job offer,” he recalls. As an accounting control undergraduate intern for PepsiCo, Anthony worked with several rotational groups throughout the larger control team. This kind of exposure early on paid off: He landed a full-time job as an accounting control intercompany analyst before starting his senior year at Valpo.

The chain of opportunities didn’t stop with Anthony. He actively sought to extend these chances to fellow Valpo students, creating a legacy of support and growth. “I referred my friend to the same internship, and he’s now hired full-time. We keep trying to pass it on to the next person. A connection that keeps blossoming! Or should I say ‘radiating’?” Anthony says with a smile as he refers to Valpo’s newly unveiled tagline “Grounded, we radiate.”

Regardless of which word you use to describe it, this ripple effect of support and mentorship is a hallmark of Valpo’s community. Anthony continues to stay connected with undergraduate students, aiding them in their career journeys. “I’m on the new hire team at PepsiCo, so whenever there’s a career opportunity, I reach out to Valpo clubs and organizations. It’s about keeping that Valpo connection strong,” he says.

As Anthony looks to the future, his aspirations are clear. “I’d like to move up to a management role. Whether it’s in Chicago or New York, I’m open to opportunities,” he says.

And we have no doubt he’ll accomplish all he sets out to do — grounded in his commitment to growth and community and radiating lasting impact for years to come.
