March 21, 2023 – Valparaiso, Indiana – Rebekah Arevalo, chief of staff and board liaison and Deondra Devitt, executive director of human resource services at Valparaiso University have been selected to participate in the Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) Leadership Academy. Both were identified by the University as being critical leaders for the future of Valpo.

“I’m honored to be selected to participate in the ICI Leadership Academy,” said Arevalo. “The Academy focuses on collaborative and engaging training and development of leaders in higher education.  As chief of staff, it is important for me to have a holistic understanding of private colleges in Indiana so I can best serve and support the President and the University.”

During the year-long program, Arevalo and Devitt will have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in higher education, specifically in the realm of private institutions.

“I am hoping to gain a different perspective of university operations,” said Devitt. “I believe this opportunity will grant me insight into areas that I would not typically have firsthand knowledge of like athletics, financial aid, advancement, admissions and student life.”

One of the primary goals of the Academy is to provide its cohort with a holistic view of their university, placing it within the context of the state and national education landscape. Arevalo and Devitt will receive training in looking at Valpo through a variety of lenses, including academically, financially, and how the University’s community involvement impacts its identity.

The Academy promotes the advancement of Indiana through its support of the Independent Colleges of Indiana and its member institutions. For more information on ICI, visit icindiana.org.
