Brauer Museum of Art Resumes Regular Hours

Nov. 15, 2022 – Valparaiso, Indiana – The Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University has ended its two-year hiatus and reopened its doors to the public with new exhibitions and new leadership under Director Jonathan Canning. The museum is open on Wednesday 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Admission is free for all, but donations are encouraged.

Canning is a graduate of London’s Courtauld Institute of Art, the University of Delaware, and Columbia University. He comes to Valpo from upstate New York, where he served the Hyde Collection as director of curatorial affairs and public programming. Previously, as senior curator and curator of the Martin D’Arcy, SJ Collection at the Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago, Canning was instrumental in building the museum’s reputation with loans to the Metropolitan Museum, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

“We are delighted to welcome Jonathan to campus,” said Provost Eric Johnson. “We look forward to the fruits of his collaborations with constituencies across the University and throughout the region.”

“The University and our supporters across the region have eagerly awaited the museum’s reopening. I’m delighted to welcome them back with an initial installation of 130 pieces,” said Canning. “I hope to quickly reestablish the Brauer in the cultural life of the University and Northwest Indiana. To that end, the museum is contributing works to upcoming exhibitions in Chicago and Indianapolis. It is my goal to share the Brauer’s treasures, near and far.”

The Brauer Museum holds more than 5,000 pieces of American art from the mid-19th century to today in its permanent collection, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. The museum holds the largest known collection of the work of Chicago artist Junius R. Slone, donated among other works by his son, Julius Slone. The collection also includes works by Frederic E. Church, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close and new pieces have been added since Canning’s arrival.

The museum will be closed for the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. For more information on the Brauer Museum’s hours and offerings, visit valpo.edu/brauer-museum-of-art/.
