Valparaiso University Professor to Present at National Museum of Mathematics

WHO: Lara Pudwell ’03, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics and statistics, will present at the National Museum of Mathematics’ (MoMath) June Math Encounters event. MoMath strives to improve perceptions about mathematics and to demonstrate its relevancy and usefulness, as well as its innate beauty as an aesthetic pursuit.
WHAT: Math Encounters is MoMath’s popular free public presentation series celebrating the spectacular world of mathematics. Intended for a general audience, the series has grown to reach each state in the U.S. and more than 100 countries around the world. Pudwell’s presentation, “Patterns in Permutations: the hidden and surprising structures that emerge from ordered lists,” will explore the unexpected and delightful results of embedding small lists into larger lists. Pudwell will demonstrate how familiar patterns connect not just to mathematics, but to computer science, chemistry and more.
Jennifer Quinn, Ph.D., professor of mathematics at the University of Washington Tacoma and president of the Mathematical Association of America, will offer a special introduction.
