Faculty and Staff Notes — Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020

Kevin Ostoyich, Ph.D., professor of history, was invited to speak to students in a new course devoted to refugees at Vassar College. The course uses four of his articles on Shanghai refugees: “A Survivor’s Luck: Reflections on Berlin and Shanghai;” “The Dealer’s Cards: How Gary Sternberg Made the Best of Them;” “A Profile of the ‘Hit Maker’: Recording the Life of Berliner, Shanghailander, and Philadelphian Gunter Hauer;” and “The Unbroken Past: From Germany to Shanghai to San Francisco.” The articles are being used as models for Vassar students as they document the history of refugees in Poughkeepsie, NY.
