Other Things to Do/Ways to Connect While Apart
- Create or update your LinkedIn profile and your resumé (Resume Guide). Ask friends, family, and/or the Career Center for feedback.
- Get your student org together virtually and create a Songfest video.
- Watch for members of Pi Phi posting about their Meals on Wheels fundraiser via social media and donate if you can. All proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels, a group that delivers meals to elderly individuals who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals.

Office and Transportation Driver Positions Available for 2020-21 – Applications are now being accepted for the OneCard, Parking and Transportation Office’s Customer Service Associate position, which assists in office daily operations. The office is also now hiring Student Transportation Drivers to drive the campus shuttle. The job descriptions and application links are on Handshake – Jobs – On-Campus. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. April 30.

2020-21 Room Selection Starts Friday – Room selection begins this week for those of you living on campus next year. If you completed step 1 of housing sign-up in February, watch your Valpo email on Thursday for your room selection appointment. Then, check with your room/suitemate(s) to see who has the earliest day/time. That person can go into DataVU Housing Self-Service on that day/time to select a space from what is available and it will pull in the confirmed room/suitemate(s).
Decrease Anxiety, Increase Your Focus – Join The Counseling Center this Friday (April 17) at 11:00 AM CST for our Introduction to Mindfulness workshop. In this 15-minute workshop, you will learn how you can use mindfulness coping strategies. The tools you will learn in this workshop can help decrease anxiety, quiet your mind, and increase your focus and general sense of wellbeing.
Telehealth With Student Insurance – If you are on the university-sponsored United HealthCare insurance, you now have the option of using telehealth at no cost on go.healthiestyou.com/student. There is a video on the site that explains more about how telehealth works. Students who are not currently on the university-sponsored health insurance can utilize this serve for $40 per consultation or check with your insurance company to see if they offer a similar product.
Applying for Emergency Grant Funds – Don’t forget to apply for emergency grant funds through the university before May 1 if you have run into COVID-19 related financial challenges like not being able to work on- or off-campus, losing a job, parent loss of employment or reduction of hours, increased medical bills due to yourself or a family member being sick, etc. You can apply for $500-$6000 if needed.
UPC Hosting Virtual Songfest – All student orgs are welcome to enter this year’s annual Songfest lip-sync competition. Create a TikTok video with your student org and email it by April 22 to upc.traditions@valpo.edu and upc.publicrelations@valpo.edu. Virtual voting for winners will begin April 25. Be sure to follow valpoupc for updates and voting.
Submissions Sought for Spring Art Contest – The Lighter literary magazine and English department are teaming up for “Isolated Art: Creation in the Midst of Quarantine & Social Distancing.” Valpo students can submit up to two pieces of art, poetry, or prose relevant, in response to, or were created during this time. First place winners in each category will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. Submissions are due April 24 online here.

Urgent Need for Blood Donations – If you live near Valpo, there is a Red Cross Blood Drive in the ARC on Thursday, April 23, 12-6 p.m. It’s in the ARC so there can be plenty of social distancing. The Red Cross is strongly encouraging people to schedule an appointment online here (choose the Athletics-Recreation Center event) to manage the number of people in the area at any given time. If you are not near Valpo, but are able to donate blood, you can enter your zip code at redcrossblood.org to find donor events near you.
Need a Cultural Diversity Course? Check out this Fall 2020 course: EAST 340: China Uncensored: An Exploratory Course (Mondays 6:30 – 9:00). Learn about the everyday lives and concerns of regular Chinese citizens, as well as explore and analyze a cultural product of your choosing (literature, film, art, theater, internet culture, video games). This class is project based and has no prerequisites. It is open to students of all disciplines who are interested in learning more about China. Updated Student Account Balance for Class Registration – Due to the effects of COVID-19, the university has raised the balance you can have on your student account and still register for Fall 2020 classes to $3,000. The maximum balance allowed is usually $1,000. At this point, if your student account balance is below $3,000, you can register for Fall classes if the rest of your registration restrictions are cleared.
