General Announcements

Urgent Need for Blood Donations — If you live near Valpo, there is a Red Cross Blood Drive in the ARC on Thursday, April 23, 12-6 p.m. It’s in the ARC so there can be plenty of social distancing. The Red Cross is strongly encouraging people to schedule an appointment online here (choose the Athletics-Recreation Center event) to manage the number of people in the area at any given time. If you are not near Valpo, but are able to donate blood, you can enter your zip code at redcrossblood.org to find donor events near you.

Creating Face Shields for COVID-19 Frontline Responders — A small group of faculty, staff, and students are 3-D printing and assembling face shields for area hospitals, clinics, firefighters, and other frontline pandemic responders. The College of Engineering has been providing the printers and the group, so far, has been using the materials they’ve had on hand. But, the requests for the face shields are flooding in and the team needs to purchase supplies. $20 makes about 7 shields. If you want to donate to the cause, here is the online donation link.

Need a Cultural Diversity Course? Check out this Fall 2020 course: EAST 340: China Uncensored: An Exploratory Course (Mondays 6:30 – 9:00). Learn about the everyday lives and concerns of regular Chinese citizens, as well as explore and analyze a cultural product of your choosing (literature, film, art, theater, internet culture, video games). This class is project based and has no prerequisites. It is open to students of all disciplines who are interested in learning more about China. For more information, contact Professor Fontaine Lien at fontaine.lien@valpo.edu.

Updated Student Account Balance for Class Registration — Due to the effects of COVID-19, the university has raised the balance you can have on your student account and still register for Fall 2020 classes to $3,000. The maximum balance allowed is usually $1,000. At this point, if your student account balance is below $3,000, you can register for Fall classes if the rest of your registration restrictions are cleared.

Res Life Offering Virtual Building Tours — Room selection occurs soon. Be sure to check out the virtual residence hall tours on ValpoResLife instagram’s saved stories if you haven’t been inside the buildings you’re hoping to live in next year.

Don’t Forget: Course Withdrawal and S/U Grading Deadline Extended — Your professors voted to extend the deadline to withdraw from a class or switch to S/U grading until 5 p.m. on April 21. This means you can still make schedule or grading changes until that time. S/U grading means that your final grade appears on your transcript as “S” for satisfactory or “U” for unsatisfactory. In order to earn an “S,” you need to be earning a C- or better in the class at the end of finals. S/U grades do not calculate into your GPA so they cannot help or harm it. If you think adjusting your schedule or switching grading options might help you this semester, please do get in touch with your academic advisor to talk through the process and what is best for you.

Student Senate Budgeting & Elections — Student Senate is currently budgeting student organizations for next year. Tier 3 budgets have been voted on, Tier 2 budgets are coming up on April 13. Budgeting questions should go to Finance Chair Jesse Hershberger (senate.finance@valpo.edu). Student Senate will hold a virtual election for Student Body President and Vice President but will save all other senate elections until August. Watch your email for more information from senate. Election questions should go to Elections Chair Eric Maruyama (eric.maruyama@valpo.edu). All other senate-related questions should go to student.senate@valpo.edu.
