Valparaiso University to Offer Mechatronics Minor
Valparaiso University’s College of Engineering introduces a new minor in mechatronics to promote interdisciplinary learning. The minor combines principles of multiple engineering branches and launches in the fall of 2020.
“We are committed to providing cutting-edge academic programs that prepare graduates for meaningful lives in a world that needs them,” said Mark L. Biermann, Ph.D., provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “This new minor in mechatronics builds on the College of Engineering’s foundation of excellence that cultivates student success with innovative and integrated teaching and learning.”
In the mechatronics minor, engineering students explore the relationship between mechanical and electrical engineering. Students complete hands-on, experiential learning in the fundamentals of robotics, automation and programmable logic controllers.
The minor can be completed in as little as 9–12 credits beyond required major coursework. Students can add a second minor in mechanical engineering or electrical and computer engineering by taking one additional course in the respective discipline.
Developing academic programs with strong career opportunities for students is one of several tenets outlined in Valpo’s strategic plan, aligned with the priority of high-quality, holistic education.
