Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces Winter Exhibitions

Opening Reception is Jan. 12

The Brauer Museum of Art’s winter exhibitions will run Jan. 7 through March 29 with an opening reception at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 12, in the Museum.

Featured exhibitions include “C. Curry Bohm: Brown County and Beyond,” “Spectral Speculations: Japanese Prints from the Ruth A. Ruege Collection” and “Mary Bourke: Unfinished.” C. Curry Bohm (1894–1971) was an Indiana Impressionist whose works will be presented in depth in this major exhibition. The “Spectral Speculations” exhibition celebrates a major gift of art to the Brauer Museum from a lifelong collector of Japanese woodblock prints. Mary Bourke is a contemporary painter who depicts family scenes with a blend of realism and fantasy.

In addition, selections from the Brauer Museum of Art’s permanent collection will be on display in the Sloan Gallery.

In connection with these exhibitions, the Brauer Museum of Art will host a gallery talk with curators Daniel Kraft and Jim Ross at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, and a Symposium for Spectral Speculations exhibition with Sandy Kita, Jennifer Prough, and featured guest Donald Jenkins at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the Duesenberg Recital Hall.

In the spring semester, the film/lecture series, “Thursday Night Noir” returns with film screenings and discussions that will study the classic film genre of the 1940s and 1950s. Four movies will be featured by the creator of the series, Peter Aglinskas. All events are free and open to the public, with the first movie screening taking place on Jan. 16. Check the Brauer’s website for additional dates.

The Valparaiso University Juried Art Student and Art Faculty Exhibitions return in April, with original pieces from both students and faculty on campus. The summer exhibitions will include “Jan Sullivan’s Nature: Works by the Founder of Art Barn School of Art,” selections from Brauer’s permanent collection, and new acquisitions.

More information about the season and upcoming events is available on the Brauer Museum of Art’s website.
