Valparaiso University Hosts Environmental Conference

The second annual Earthtones Conference at Valparaiso University is March 23, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. This interdisciplinary event is intended to bring together like-minded students, professors, professionals and community members to discuss a wide variety of environmental topics.

The conference is sponsored by Earthtones, a student organization at Valpo that aims to help the environment and promote good environmental practices across campus.

Morning and afternoon sessions will consist of speaker presentations, panels, discussions and displays. The morning and afternoon sessions differ, but mirror each other in structure so that anyone can attend and still have a well-rounded experience. Students, professors, community members and environmental organizations will be participating, and all are welcome to attend this free event.

The goal of the conference is to bring together people of all backgrounds to exchange ideas, discuss difficult questions and learn from each other in order to promote environmental awareness in Valparaiso.

Speakers will cover topics such as sustainability, food consciousness, saving the Indiana Dunes and renewable energy technology. Speakers include Valpo students and faculty including David Western, lecturer in humanities and political thought, who will be presenting about re-examining humanity in the face of ecological collapse, and Julie Peller, professor of chemistry, speaking about water plastic pollution.

“We hope that everyone who attends both shares their knowledge and learns from others’ diverse areas of expertise and experience,” said Rachel Sims ’19, Earthtones president.
