Valparaiso University Engineering Scholarship Funded

Valparaiso University has received an IRA charitable contribution from Rosemary and Chuck Newton ’61 to establish the Newton-Antonelli Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide scholarship assistance to students enrolled in the College of Engineering, with preference to those who are of the Lutheran faith. In recognition of their families, the Newton-Antonelli Scholarship carries Chuck’s family name, as well Antonelli, Rosemary’s maiden name.

The initial scholarship award will take place during the fall 2019 semester, from the income produced by the invested endowed funds. Each year a College of Engineering student will benefit from the Newton-Antonelli Scholarship and will be able to pursue their Valpo education. As an endowed scholarship, the award will be made in perpetuity and impact countless generations of students.

“Rosemary and I are blessed to be able to support Valpo and establish this scholarship,” said Chuck Newton. “The education that I received helped me develop the skills, knowledge and values that guided me throughout my career. We hope that the students who receive the scholarship are impacted in the same way.”

Chuck Newton earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University. In 1965, four years after graduating, he joined Olin Corporation and worked for the company for 30 years, retiring in 1995 as vice president of environment and regulatory affairs. While his undergraduate training was as an engineer, his Valpo education prepared him for a career that involved management duties at chemical plants in the U.S. and abroad, including director of manufacturing and division vice president of operations.

“All of us at the College of Engineering are grateful to Rosemary and Chuck for establishing the Newton-Antonelli Scholarship,” said Eric W. Johnson ’87, College of Engineering dean. “He is wonderful example of our alumni who have had great success in the corporate world and then give back to the College to ensure the students who follow have the same opportunity.”

The gift from the Newtons supports Forever Valpo: The Campaign for Our Future, a $250 million endowment campaign that will secure permanent resources for student scholarships, faculty development and programs that prepare students for lives of leadership and service. The Campaign was officially launched on Sept. 23, 2016, and has raised more than $200 million.
