Valparaiso University Introduces Music Therapy Bachelor’s Program

Valpo’s Department of Music will expand its degree offerings with the development of a cutting-edge music therapy bachelor’s degree program that integrates the art of music with the science of healing. The program is projected to begin in the fall of 2019.

“We’re excited to build on the success of Valpo’s music programs with the launch of a bachelor’s degree in music therapy,” said Mark L. Biermann, Ph.D., provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “Valparaiso University’s commitment to serving generously and to cultivating hope places us in a prime position to graduate thoughtful and caring leaders in this growing field.”

Valparaiso University has been a leader in higher education since 1859 and is an accredited institutional member of National Association of Schools of Music. In its music therapy program, students will be immersed in the approaches, both spiritual and evidence-based, of this interdisciplinary field with growing demand. Based on a successful process to achieve accreditation, the professional degrees awarded through this program will be accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association.

The mission of the music therapy program at Valpo is to develop compassionate, mindful, social and culturally conscious music therapists. Valpo’s music therapy students will be empowered to bring hope, healing, recovery, support and beauty through music to some of the most vulnerable in society. Drawing from time-tested practices as well as indigenous wisdom and beliefs, they will develop presence and character and learn to serve as global leaders through a socially sensitive and culturally responsive curriculum.

Taking a 360-degree approach to music education, the music therapy program will focus on core music requirements, as well as 20–25 credits of new music therapy-specific coursework, observations, service trips, cultural immersions, fieldwork and internships. Work will take place in settings ranging from mental health clinics to religious institutions to prisons to community centers.

Developing academic programs that provide strong career opportunities for students is one of several strategies outlined in Valpo’s strategic plan, aligned with the priority to provide high-quality holistic education.
