Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces 2017–2018 Season

The 2017–2018 season at the Brauer Museum of Art kicks off with an opening reception Friday, Sept. 8, featuring works in a variety of media ranging from abstract to representational.

The fall exhibitions run through Dec. 10 and feature a collection of more than 55 works by legendary Midwest artist Frank V. Dudley, who painted the Indiana Dunes for more than 40 years. One of Dudley’s earliest and most important paintings, included in this exhibition, depicts the Dunes Pageant of 1917, a key event in the history of the preservation of this beloved landscape. The centenary exhibition, curated by Brauer Museum Director Gregg Hertzlieb, will be housed in the Wehling, McGill and West Galleries. A book by Dudley scholar James Dabbert accompanies the exhibition and will be available for purchase during the exhibition.

Located in the Ferguson Gallery, “Now, Then and Again: The Art of Douglas Calisch” presents inventive and complex mixed media creations by contemporary Midwestern artist and educator Douglas Calisch. This exhibition is curated by Brauer Museum Associate Curator Gloria Ruff.

Rounding out the exhibitions, “Old Master Prints from a Private Collection” in the Education Room includes significant works by such artists as Rembrandt, Dürer and Goya.

To accompany these exhibitions, the Brauer will host a gallery talk with artist Douglas Calisch on Oct. 18, in addition to student coffee hours with Gregg Hertzlieb and art historian James Dabbert on Oct. 4 and Nov. 1, respectively.

In the spring semester, the film/lecture series, “The Noir Style in Image, Word and Sound” returns to offer film screenings and discussions that will explore the classic film genre. Four iconic movies will be featured by Indiana University Northwest Performing Arts faculty member and creator of the lecture series, Peter Aglinskas. All events are free and open to the public, with showings running January–April.

The winter exhibitions debut Jan. 9, with “Overwhelming Beauty: Painting, Collage and Sculpture by Henning Eichinger and Yvonne Kendall;” The Wonderful World of Puppetry: Marionettes by Ralph Kipniss;” and “The World’s Foremost Wood Engraver: Thomas Bewick Prints from the Collection of Tom Brand.”

The Valparaiso University Art Student Exhibition and Art Faculty Exhibition return in April, featuring original artwork by Valpo students and faculty. The summer exhibitions include new acquisitions and selections from the permanent collection.

Throughout the season, the Brauer Museum will host coffee hours and gallery talks with artists, curators and art collectors.
