Valparaiso University Students Receive Local, National Fellowships

The Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University has selected 20 Valpo current and graduating students for Calling and Purpose in Society (CAPS) Fellowships during summer 2017.

Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and will complete internships with organizations dedicated to service and leadership for eight to 10 weeks during the summer.  The CAPS Fellows Program helps Valpo students develop their sense of Calling and Purpose in Society through intensive experiential-learning opportunities accompanied by significant reflection.

The 2017 CAPS Fellows are:

  • Michelle Andersen ’19, a social work and psychology double major, Katie Bahn ’18, a nursing major, and Madelyn Nieter ’18, a health care leadership major, will serve at National Lutheran Communities and Services in Rockville, Md. Michelle will work in new program development, Katie in clinical administration, and Madelyn in operational leadership.
  • Kaitlyn Braun ’17, an English major, will serve at Charitable Allies in Indianapolis.
  • Victoria Bruick ’17, an English and music double major, Jazmyn Harmon-Whitlow ’18, a political science and criminology double major, and Kendall Kartaly ’18, an English and secondary education double major, will serve at Ingenuity in Chicago. Victoria will work in research and data analysis, Jazmyn in communications and media, and Kendall in partnerships and professional learning.
  • Adam Bruno ’17, a history and secondary education double major, Magen Hauser ’17, a psychology major, and Kathleen Prahlow ’17, a Spanish and secondary education double major, will serve at Heartland Alliance Refugee & Immigrant Services in Chicago. Adam will work in youth and family services, Magen in resettlement and placement, and Kathleen in English language and training.
  • Aaron Cartwright ’17, an economics and political science double major, and Joshua Henderson ’17, an international economics and cultural affairs and Chinese studies double major, will serve at Venn Strategies in Washington, D.C.
  • Nicholle Day ’17, a digital media arts major, and Jonah Koetke ’19, a psychology major, will serve at Lutheran Services in America in Washington, D.C. Nicholle will work in communications and advocacy and Jonah in membership engagement and research.
  • Megan Gilliam ’18, an English and sociology double major with a concentration in criminology, will serve at ArtMix in Indianapolis.
  • Louisa Ishida ’18, a communications major with a concentration in public relations, will serve at Water to Thrive in Austin, Texas.
  • Katie Karstensen ’18, an elementary education major, will serve at Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants in Chicago.
  • Erica Marske ’18, a nursing major, will serve at Ancilla Systems in Hobart, Ind.
  • Regan Weber ’17, an art and humanities double major, will serve at Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis.
  • Jacob Williams ’17, a global service and international relations double major, will serve at International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) in Washington, D.C.
