Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Welcomes Spring Exhibitions

Opening Reception is April 12

Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art will premiere its spring exhibitions, featuring original artwork by Valparaiso University students as well as works by Jon Hook, Andrea Peterson, and Ernst Schwidder, with an opening reception on April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Arts on Valparaiso University’s campus.

The annual student art exhibition in the museum’s Wehling and McGill Galleries will feature student pieces in a variety of traditional and digital media, selected by Valpo’s studio instructors during the course of the academic year. The April 12 opening reception will include an award ceremony to honor the students’ work.

In Gallery 1212, “Botanical Lore, Legend, and Transformation: Works by Jon Hook and Andrea Peterson” will showcase art by Northwest Indiana artists. Peterson is an internationally exhibiting artist and educator whose work is multifaceted and explores all types of paper fibers and processes. Hook specializes in clay pottery and sculpture and draws inspiration from the natural world. The artists will offer a special gallery talk on April 19 at 7 p.m.

“The Art of Ernst Schwidder” will celebrate the career of the liturgical artist in the Ferguson Gallery. Through Schwidder’s skills and vision, he has significantly influenced church design nationwide. The Brauer Museum has in its exhibition paintings by Schwidder, as well as a large hand carved mahogany altar that Schwidder originally created for Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle.

The popular series Thursday Night Noir closes April 20 with a screening of the 1956 film “The Killing.” The film/lecture series offers film screenings and discussions throughout the semester that explore the classic film genre. Four iconic movies have been featured by Indiana University Northwest Performing Arts faculty member and creator of the lecture series, Peter Aglinskas.

Throughout the season, the Brauer Museum will host additional coffee hours and gallery talks with artists, curators, and art collectors. All events are free and open to the public.
