Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces 2016–2017 Season

Opening Reception is Aug. 28

The Brauer Museum’s 2016–2017 season kicks off with an opening reception Sunday, Aug. 28, featuring works in a variety of media ranging from abstract to representational.

The fall exhibitions run through Dec. 11 and feature photographs by Louise Witkin-Berg in an exhibition titled “External Reflections — Internal Wars,” housed in the Wehling and McGill Galleries and the Education Room. This retrospective exhibition showcases abstract figurative works by the acclaimed photographer.

Located in the Ferguson Gallery and Gallery 1212, “True to Form: Works from Chicago Sculpture International” is curated by Gregg Hertzlieb and Gloria Ruff and includes sculptures in a wide variety of styles and materials.

To accompany these exhibitions, the Brauer will host a gallery talk with members of Chicago Sculpture International on Sept. 14 and a student coffee hour with Louise Witkin-Berg on Nov. 2, offering a unique opportunity to hear from the artists themselves on Valpo’s campus.

In the spring semester, the film/lecture series, “The Noir Style in Image, Word, and Sound” returns to offer film screenings and discussions that will explore the classic film genre. Four iconic movies will be featured on behalf of Indiana University Northwest Performing Arts faculty member and creator of the lecture series, Peter Aglinskas. All events are free and open to the public, with showings running January–April.

The winter exhibitions debut Jan. 10, with “Sand & Steel: Visions of Our Indiana Shore,” curated by Gregg Hertzlieb; “Martin: a Sculpture by Bill Jeter;” “American Byways: Selections from U.S. Highway 80;” and “Photographs by Rebecca Nolan.”

The Valparaiso University Art Student Exhibition returns in April, featuring students’ original artwork, along with “Botanical Lore, Legend and Transformation: Works by Jon Hook and Andrea Peterson” and “The Art of Ernst Schwidder.”

The summer exhibitions include new acquisitions as well as “Duneland on Display: Works by the Duneland Plein Air Painters.”

Throughout the season, the Brauer Museum will host additional coffee hours and gallery talks with artists, curators, and art collectors.
