Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Features Spring Exhibitions

The Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University will premiere its spring exhibitions, which run from April 13 through May 8 and feature artwork in a variety of media. New exhibitions include works by Valpo art students and faculty, “Paintings and Drawings by Kartik Trivedi,” and “Sacred Spaces and Objects.”

The annual student art exhibition in the museum’s Wehling and McGill Galleries and Education Room features student pieces in a variety of traditional and digital media, selected by Valpo’s studio instructors during the course of the academic year. Additionally, this year marks the debut of the art department’s Senior Seminar that features art by four students using digital media. The April 13 opening reception will include an award ceremony to honor the students’ work.

The Brauer Museum will also display new and recent creations by Valpo art faculty members in the West Gallery. The biennial art faculty exhibition highlights original artwork by 10 studio professors, including paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, ceramics, and digital and video art. An opening reception for this exhibition will be held Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m., with comments and acknowledgements at 7:15 p.m.

In the Ferguson Gallery, the Brauer Museum will present paintings and drawings by the Indian artist Kartik Trivedi. Trivedi is a multi-talented artist who is admired internationally for his colorful folk art and impressionist paintings. An opening reception will be held Sunday, April 17, at 2 p.m. In addition, a brief program at 2:15 p.m. will include Subbayamma Nagubadi’s donation to the Brauer Museum’s permanent collection of a Trivedi painting titled “Family.”

Gallery 1212 will house “Sacred Spaces and Objects: The Visual, Material, and Tangible” curated by George Pati, Ph.D., associate professor of theology and Surjit S. Patheja, M.D. Chair in World Religions and Ethics. In this exhibition, Pati draws together images of sacred spaces in India that he took during his travels there as well as objects in a variety of media that relate to Indian rituals and ceremonies. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The summer exhibitions, on display May 17 through Aug. 7, include new acquisitions in the Wehling and McGill Galleries, “Images of the Dunes from the Brauer Museum’s Permanent Collection” in Gallery 1212, and “An Artist’s Journey: Works by the Area Artists Association of Michigan City” in the West Gallery.
