Third Annual Shakespeare Week Returns to Valpo Jan. 11-16

Valparaiso University welcomes back Actors From The London Stage for a weeklong residency Jan. 11-16 as part of the third annual Shakespeare Week.

The accomplished group of classically trained actors will stop on its 2016 Spring Tour for a series of classroom visits, workshops, and Shakespeare-oriented events at Valpo. The week culminates with three performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” All events, sponsored by Christ College in collaboration with the English and theatre departments, are in the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts.

Highlights include:

  • Jan. 12: Shakespeare and Cervantes: A Celebration in Readings and Music, 7 p.m., Duesenberg Recital Hall
    Sponsored by the Department of English. Free admission.
    2015–2016 marks 400 years of two literary greats: William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. In their honor, Shakespeare Week kicks off with a celebration in readings and music. Theatre and English students will read from Cervantes’ famous novel “Quixote” and Shakesepeare’s lost play “Cardenio,” inspired by a character from the novel. Music will include an a capella group, as well as  a vocalist, and piano in settings of Cervantes’ and Shakespeare’s works.
  • Jan. 13: Laws in Conflict and Political Compromise in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” 6:30 p.m., University Theatre
    Virginia Strain, Shakespearean scholar, recipient of the Shakespeare Association of America’s J. Leeds Barroll Dissertation Prize, and author of “Shakespeare’s Living Law: Theatrical, Lyrical, and Legal Practice,” recently published in Literature Compass.
    Sponsored by the Christ College Symposium Speaker Series. Free admission.
  • Jan. 14-16: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” 7 p.m., University Theatre
    $10 Valpo students, faculty, and staff and groups of 10 or more
    $20 general admission
  • Jan. 16: Community Workshop with the Actors From The London Stage, 2–4 p.m.
    Sponsored by the theatre department. Free admission.
