Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces Spring 2015 Exhibitions
Opening Reception is April 15
Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art continues to grow its permanent collection with major acquisitions from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. These works, along with select original artwork by Valpo students, comprise an exciting spring collection, which debuts with an opening reception April 15 at 7 p.m., free and open to the public.
On display in the Wehling and McGill Galleries, the annual student art exhibition features a variety of media including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, graphic design, printmaking and video. The pieces are hand selected by Valpo’s studio instructors, and the April 15 opening reception includes an award ceremony to recognize the students’ work.
“I am consistently impressed by the quality of work that comes out of the art studio classrooms,” said Brauer Museum director and curator Gregg Hertzlieb.
The Brauer’s Education Room features Greek and Roman stone tablets from the Brauer Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Valpo students Jenna Turpin, Elizabeth Almasy and Emily Curosh are curators for this exhibition. The tablets will be returned to Turkey when the exhibition ends.
The Brauer Museum’s Ferguson Gallery houses Andy Warhol screenprints from the Brauer Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Curated by Valpo students Kevvie Simonsen and Kayla Nomina, the show highlights screenprints as well as Warhol photographs owned by the Brauer.
During the spring and summer, the Brauer’s Ferguson Gallery will feature “The Preposthumous Works of Harry Brown.” The summer exhibitions, on display May 15 through Aug. 9, include selections from the permanent collection in the Wehling and McGill Galleries and “Herman Gurfinkel: Hidden Northwest Indiana Legend” in the West Gallery.
Throughout the season, the Brauer Museum hosts coffee hours and gallery talks with artists, curators and art collectors.
