Valpo Hosts Award-Winning Poet Mary Szybist Thursday, Nov. 6
WHO: Mary, Szybist, the 2013 National Book Award Winner for Poetry for her second book, “Incarnadine.”
Szybist holds degrees from the University of Virginia and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a teaching-writing fellow. “Granted,” her first poetry collection, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and winner of the 2004 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. She is also a recipient of the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Pushcart Prize in 2012. Her work has appeared in the Iowa Review and Denver Quarterly and was featured in Best American Poetry.
WHAT: As part of the Christ College Symposium, Szybist will read from “Incarnadine.” The event is co-hosted by Wordfest, with additional support from the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Chair in Christian Ethics, the Emil and Elfriede Jochum University Chair, the Valparaiso Core and the arts committee of Valparaiso University.
In addition, the Lilly Fellows program will host a reception prior to the reading.
WHEN/WHERE: The reception is at 4-5 p.m. in Linwood House. The reading begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Resurrection. Both are free and open to the public.
