Valparaiso University Sorority and Fraternity Community Receives National Recognition

The Valparaiso University sorority and fraternity community received multiple national awards for overall excellence at the recent Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. AFLV is an organization that stimulates growth and development of sorority and fraternity communities by promoting educational, leadership, and values-based experiences and resources. The goal of the AFLV is for all sorority and fraternity members to embody and live ethical values daily.

The Valparaiso University Panhellenic Council, the governing body for all sororities at Valpo, was named a Division 2 category winner for the 2014 Sutherland Award for Overall Excellence for Panhellenic Councils.

“Receiving the overall excellence award on behalf of the community was an amazing honor,” said Jeannette Paige, Panhellenic Council president. “This award shows us that the community is moving in a positive direction, and it definitely lit a fire in the 2014 Executive Board officers to continue to improve and implement positive changes.”

The Panhellenic Council also received recognitions for excellence in Membership Recruitment, Community Service and Philanthropy, Risk Reduction and Management, Self-Governance and Judicial Affairs, Academic Achievement, Council Management, Leadership and Educational Development, and Public Relations.

The Valparaiso University Interfraternity Council, the governing body for all fraternities at Valpo, was also named a Division 2 category winner for the 2014 Jellison Award for Overall Excellence for Interfraternity Councils. In addition, the council received recognitions for excellence in Membership Recruitment, Risk Reduction and Management, Self-Governance and Judicial Affairs, Academic Achievement, Council Management, Leadership and Educational Development, and Public Relations.

The Valparaiso University sorority and fraternity community has been part of the University since 1903 and works to align all activities with the academic mission of the institution. This is the first time in the University’s history that the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils have received this level of recognition or been named the Overall Excellence award winner.
