Heugli Lecture

Valparaiso University’s biannual Huegli Lecutre will feature the Rev. Serene Jones.

Valpo faculty, staff, and students, as well as the greater Valparaiso community, are invited to hear Jones speak on “Commoning Theology.” Jones is the 16th president of the historic Union Theological Seminary in New York City. The first woman to head the 176-year old interdenominational seminary, Jones occupies the Johnston Family Chair for Religion and Democracy and has formed Union’s Institute for Women, Religion, and Globalization. Over the years, Union has welcomed numerous legendary teachers and scholars, including Christian ethicist Reinhold Niebuhr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Paul Tillich. Jones is a leading theologian who regularly contributes to scholarly and public discussions on faith, social justice, and public life.

The Huegli Lecture is named in honor of the late Albert G. Huegli, who served as president of Valparaiso University from 1968 to 1978. Huegli joined Valpo’s staff in 1961 as vice president for academic affairs and held that position for seven years before being named president. During his tenure as president, 18 buildings were constructed or renovated, the Valparaiso University endowment grew nearly tenfold, and changes were implemented in academic programs to strengthen teaching faculty.

A short reception will follow the lecture at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the Mueller Hall Commons.
