Valpo Welcomes Zoe Weil to Peace and Social Justice Symposium

Valparaiso University is proud to welcome Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education, as the keynote speaker for its annual Peace and Social Justice Symposium, held Feb. 16.

Weil is considered a pioneer in the comprehensive humane education movement, which works to create a humane, peaceful, healthy and just world for all people, animals and the environment. In 1996, Weil co-founded the Institute for Humane Education, which has partnered with The Graduate School at Valpo to offer five graduate programs in humane education, the only graduate programs of their kind in the United States or Canada. The coursework for these programs is offered in an online format, enabling students from the United States and abroad to complete the program remotely, with the exception of a one-week Humane Education residency held at the Institute for Humane Education’s headquarters in Surry, Maine (required for two of the programs).

The Institute for Humane Education works to create a world in which we all live humanely, sustainably and peaceably. This can be done through training people to be humane educators who teach about the pressing issues of our time and inspire people to work for change while making healthy, humane and restorative choices in their daily lives.

The Peace and Social Justice Symposium is sponsored by Vapo’s Office of Multicultural Programs and funded in part through a grant from the United States Institute for Peace. The Symposium aims to actively promote civic engagement and social responsibility toward strengthening peace, justice, equality and unity on Valpo’s campus and in the local and global communities. The Symposium provides an avenue for discussion of global and domestic issues affecting world peace, human rights, race relations, justice and other social concerns.

Weil will deliver her keynote address on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 9:45 a.m. in the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University.
