Brauer exhibits feature photography, paintings, sculptures, and digital art

Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art presents “The Art of George Ames Aldrich,” “John Miller Digital Images, Paintings, and Drawings,” “Richard Hunt Sculpture,” and “Southwestern Art: Selected Works.” The exhibits will be on display from Aug. 21 through Nov. 16.

“The Art of George Ames Aldrich” was curated by Michael Wright. The exhibition will feature the first-ever retrospective look on Aldrich’s career. Aldrich has worked throughout Europe, and in the American cities of Chicago and South Bend.

“The Aldrich pieces will definitely stand out this season,” said Gregg Hertzlieb, director of the Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo. “These paintings have never been brought together before. He’s beloved in South Bend, and it will be exciting for people to see his best works together.”

Something else new to museum-goers will be the digital art in the exhibition of “John Miller Digital Images, Paintings, and Drawings.” The Brauer Museum will showcase Miller’s early drawings as well as paintings from the 1990s. More recently, Miller has created abstract digital computer images; something Hertzlieb believes will impress viewers in both size and presence.

Also featured this season is “Southwestern Art: Selected Works.” This exhibit will display pieces primarily from the museum’s collection and will showcase works of southwestern artists and themes.

The Brauer Museum will also host sculpture pieces by Chicago artist Richard Hunt. The pieces will come from the museum’s permanent collection, as well as items borrowed locally and from the artist himself.

The museum will host an opening reception for all the exhibitions at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. A Gallery Talk with curator Michael Wright is scheduled for 7 p.m Wednesday, Sept. 26.

The exhibitions are made possible by funds provided by the Brauer Museum of Art’s Sloan Endowment, the Brauer Museum of Art’s Robert and Caroline Collings Endowment, Charles S. Hayes, the Brauer Museum of Art’s Brauer Endowment, and the Partners for the Brauer Museum of Art.
