Valpo to honor alumni for achievement, service

Recipients of the Alumni Community Service Award, which honors alumni who have enhanced the prestige of the University by virtue of their character and integrity through outstanding service in their community, are:

John M. Albers ’85 earned his bachelor of arts degree from Valparaiso University with majors in Theology and Greek. Albers is currently a pastor of Faith Memorial Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, where he and his wife, Debra (Berg ’86), live.

Adele (Sohn ’43) Harrison earned her bachelor of arts degree from Valparaiso University with a major in history. She founded and served as the coordinator for an organization known as Friends in Sonoma Helping (FISH) for many years until her retirement. She lives in Sonoma, Calif.

Ann (Hintz ’81) Rehbein earned her bachelor of arts degree in religion from Valparaiso University. She is currently a deaconess at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Stockton, Calif., where she and her husband, Michael ’78, live.

Michael S. Rehbein ’78 earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry and biology from Valparaiso University. He is currently working in Modesto, Calif. as the assistant physician-in-chief with Kaiser Permanente. He and his wife Ann (Hintz ’81) live in Stockton, Calif.

Honorary Alumni Membership is granted to individuals who are not alumni, but who exemplify the ideals of achievement and service in their association with the University:

Richard P. Baepler received his Ph.D. in 1964 from the University of Chicago’s Divinity School while teaching at Valpo. During his career at Valparaiso University he held a variety of positions in the department of theology, Christ College, academic affairs and the School of Law. He lives in Valparaiso.

Dawn Rickman is a graduate of Mundelein High School and has a retail management certificate from Robert Morris Chicago. She and her husband, Michael ’84, currently live in Shanghai, China.

The O.P. Kretzmann Award, which recognizes recognizes alumni for long-time and exemplary service as a University employee, will be presented to:

John Feaster ’63 earned his bachelor of arts degree in government from Valparaiso University. He retired from Valparaiso University’s department of English after serving more than 40 years in various capacities. He and his wife, Susan (Sauer ’64), live in Valparaiso.

Dale F. Kempf ’62 earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Valparaiso University. He retired from Valpo’s College of Engineering as an adjunct assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. Dale lives in Valparaiso.

Warren M. Kosman ’67 received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry with minors in physics and mathematics from Valparaiso University. Kosman taught for 36 years at Valpo and was the chair of the chemistry department for the past 18 years. He and his wife, Kathryn ’84, live in Valparaiso.

William J. Schoech ’66 earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Valparaiso University. He taught and mentored students in Valparaiso University’s College of Engineering for 39 years. William and his wife, Susan, live in Valparaiso.

Albert R. Trost ’62 earned his bachelor of arts degree in government from Valparaiso University. Trost was a faculty member at Valpo from 1963 until his retirement in 2010. He also served as the dean of the college of arts and sciences from 1996 to 2006. He and his wife, Ann (Fields ’65), live in Valparaiso.

Ann (Fields ’65) Trost earned her bachelor of arts degree in geography and sociology from Valparaiso University. She was employed as Valparaiso University’s registrar for twenty-five years until her retirement in 2010. She and her husband, Albert ’62, live in Valparaiso.
