World-renowned violinist to perform with Symphony Orchestra

The 15th anniversary of the Valparaiso University Homecoming Concert, featuring the University’s Symphony Orchestra, will include a special appearance by award-winning violinist Yuan-Qing Yu from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Yuan-Qing, Assistant Concertmaster for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, along with her colleague Brant Taylor, cellist, will perform with the students in the event on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of the Resurrection.

Beginning in the 2011-12 academic year, Yuan-Qing will be named Artist-Teacher in Music at Valparaiso University.

“What attracted me to Valparaiso University is the dedication of the faculty members and the students’ passion for learning,” said Yuan-Qing. “I look forward to working with the faculty members as a team and help the students blossom into mature musicians and citizens.”

An international award-winning violinist, Yuan-Qing leads an active life in music as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. She has given numerous critically acclaimed performances as featured soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio France Philharmonic, and the London City Orchestra, and has performed concerti under the direction of well-known musicians such as Christoph von Dohnányi, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Marek Janowski, and James DePreist.

Conducted by Dennis Friesen-Carper, professor of music, the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra features nearly 60 students representing a range of different majors from within the various colleges of the University.

Tickets for adults are $15 and $10 for senior citizens and non-Valpo students. Valparaiso University students, faculty and staff get in free with ID card. For more information, visit valpo.edu/music.
