Black history month celebration to include dinner, inspirational speakers

Valparaiso University will host a series of events in February to celebrate the achievements of African-Americans in observance of Black History Month. The events are sponsored by the Black Student Organization and the Office of Multicultural Programs.

Highlighting the celebration will be the 13th annual Black History Month Dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Harre Union Ballroom on the Valpo campus.

The theme of this year’s celebration dinner is “An Evening of Elegance” and will feature a keynote address given by LouJeanne Walton, associate professor emerita of social work, as well as comedy performances, art, and a silent auction.

This formal event is open to the public, as well as university students, faculty and staff. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for general admission and may be purchased at the Harre Union Welcome Desk, online at https://www.valpo.edu/union/tickets/ or by calling 219.464.6769.

Dinner guests will laugh, think and be inspired by special guest performer, Preacher Moss.

“Preacher Moss is a comedian and called a social tour-de-force on the tough issues of diversity and race relations,” said Jane Bello-Brunson, director of multicultural programs at Valpo. “His insights, credibility, and balance on the issues of race make ‘The End of Racism’ comedy tour one of the most sought after diversity events on college campuses today.”

A silent auction and video presentation will also be included in the celebration. The Silent Auction will benefit the Office of Multicultural Programs’ Scholarships and the Book Assistance Program. Items for sale will include art work from notable artists, cultural figurines, books, and jewelry.
