Announcing New Faculty Campus Citizenship Award
In spring 2018, the Committee to Enhance Learning and Teaching (CELT) realized that there currently was no way to recognize outstanding contributions in campus citizenship, so the chairs of CELT and Faculty Senate proposed establishing a new internal award. With the support of the Office of the Provost, the Valparaiso University Excellence in Campus Citizenship Award has been created and will be administered by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
Award Description
The Excellence in Campus Citizenship Award recognizes an outstanding faculty member each year for his or her commitment to and excellence in campus citizenship. As described in the Faculty Handbook, the University values essential elements of campus citizenship, including “contributions to planning and governance, leadership in achieving the goals of the department, college, and University (which include student recruitment and retention), working with students outside the classroom, and extending the resources of the University to the church and the wider community.”
Each year, one award will be presented to a faculty member, who will receive an award of $3,000.
The award winner will be announced via email and honored at the Spring Faculty Meeting.
All full-time faculty with at least three years of full-time service to the University may be nominated for the award. Previous award winners are not disqualified from nomination or winning again.
Nominations are Now Open
Individual faculty members may be nominated by any member of the University community (students, faculty, staff, and administrators) by submitting a nomination packet to the secretary of the Faculty Senate, Becky Strain (becky.strain@valpo.edu), by 5 p.m. on April 9, 2020. Nominators are to submit a completed nomination packet, including a nomination letter, two letters of support, and an abridged CV of the nominee, extolling the exemplar campus citizenship. Documentation Requirements
- A nomination letter of no more than two (single sided) pages that outline the exemplar qualities exhibited by the nominee. The exemplar work in campus citizenship can come from a wide range of potential areas such as college and university committees, academic advising, mentoring, supervision of student research, etc. For a more complete listing of activities related to campus citizenship, please see section 2.3.4.4 in the Faculty Handbook.
- Two letters of recommendation that highlight a particular aspect of the work of the nominee and how that exemplifies the best in faculty campus citizenship (each up to two pages in length).
- A short (up to two pages) CV for the nominee focused on their work at the University especially related to campus citizenship.
The overall page length for written documents should not exceed eight (8) pages. Any pages beyond this limit will not be considered when reviewing the nomination packet.
