Dean's Notes
The fall semester has begun and I am energized from meeting alumni all over the Midwest. I have received a warm welcome and I look forward to traveling to meet more alumni at gatherings in Fort Wayne, Phoenix and Washington D.C. in October.
If we haven’t had the chance to meet, I encourage you to come back to Valparaiso Law at Homecoming or meet me at one of our alumni events near you. I want to meet the Law School alumni as they have left a rich legacy for this Law School. For now, I am enjoying spending time getting acquainted with our students as they get back into the full swing of classes.
Valparaiso Law is operating in change mode. The Law School has revamped its curriculum to integrate doctrinal and clinical skills into the curriculum – and I am excited to move this initiative forward. Legal education is moving in this direction because employees are demanding a hybrid of skills and I am proud to say that Valparaiso Law is at the cutting edge of this movement.
I’ve shared this information with several alumni groups I met with over the summer, but for those of you who don’t know, we received a preliminary report from the American Bar Association concerning our ABA site visit from this past spring. The report was full of compliments but what stood out the most were their remarks concerning our new curriculum. The report stated that if our curriculum works – and we think that it is – other law schools will be looking to Valparaiso University Law School as an example on how to teach, manage and conduct the business of legal education. All of us will reap the benefits of such an achievement.
My first introduction to the Law School student body as the Dean was at the Law School’s annual picnic in mid-August. It felt good to stand in the same room with some of the brightest and most interesting students I have met. I am looking forward to working with the faculty to sharpen and develop these students into the BEST legal minds entering the market upon their graduation.
I am happy to be here, and to lead the charge. After meeting so many wonderful Valpo law alumni and students, I am more excited than ever to work WITH the alumni, faculty and staff to continue moving things in the right direction. I hope you are looking forward to jumping in when I need alumni assistance or willing to answer my calls when I reach out – and I will personally reach out. Trust me.
Sincerely,
Andrea D. Lyon
