Scholarships

Dr. Hugh McGuigan Scholarship

As a result of an initiative by Kunle Oguneye (‘97) and other international alumni, a scholarship fund was started in January 2018 in honor of Dr. Hugh McGuigan, retired Director of International Studies (1983-2008). The first one-time scholarships were awarded to two international students in spring 2020, three were selected in spring 2021, and four were awarded in spring 2022.

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Full-time, degree-seeking international students on F-1 or J-1 visas who are sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students;
  • Completed at least 2 semesters at Valparaiso University;
  • Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (undergraduate) or 3.5 (graduate) when applying;
  • Exhibit leadership qualities

Aakrista Shakya

Aakrista is junior Computer Engineering bachelor’s student.  From Kathmandu, Nepal, he has guided his fellow students as a Resident Assistant (RA) for 2 years and is involved in the campus UPC (university programming council) community outreach committee.

Prashant Bhatta

 Prashant is a sohpomore Actuarial Science bachelor’s student.  From Jogbudha, Nepal, he has served as VISA (Valparaiso International Student Association) treasurer for the 2021-22 school year as well as being a member of Student Senate. 

Muhammad Salman Afzal

Salman is graduating in May 2022 with a master’s in Analytics & Modeling. From Lahore, Pakistan, he has been involved in a number of activities & roles while at Valpo, including the Muslim Student Association and working as the OIP intern in Fall 2021.

Ishan Parekh

Ishan is a junior Environmental Science bachelor’s student.  From Surat, India, he studied abroad in Costa Rica for the Spring 2022 semester, and is a member of the Gamma Theta Upsilon International Geographical Honor Society.

Kavya Hari

Earning her Master’s Degree in IT in May 2021, Kavya worked as Teaching Assistant for different courses and also as an intern for the Office of International Programs. She has become a great resource for tips & advice to newly arrived international students.

Shreedhar Pandey

A Junior Bachelors student, Shree is serving as President for one of the largest student organizations, VISA (Valparaiso International Student Association). He has also been involved in working with many other organizations on campus.

Anand Agrawal

A Sophomore Bachelors student, Anand is serving as Vice president for VISA and as a Teaching Assistant. Anand also works as an OIP student Ambassador to help international students.

 

In April 2020, Estefany Bocangel Gamarra ’21, from Peru, and Sai Praneeth Gorintala ’20, from India, became the inaugural recipients of the Dr. Hugh McGuigan International Student Scholarship, a fund established to support international students at Valpo.
