WHAT IS THE HOOSIER STEM ACADEMY?

Valparaiso University will partner with Ball State University, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Purdue University to establish a new STEM continuing education and graduate program–The Hoosier STEM Teacher Program.

Hoosier STEM Teachers serves currently licensed math and science teachers across the state who wish to take graduate courses.

Licensed Indiana STEM teachers who work at an under-served school, or a school that’s currently experiencing a STEM teacher shortage, are eligible to apply and pursue enrollment. This program serves currently licensed math and science teachers across the state who wish to take graduate courses. All future applicants must have completed their bachelor’s degree from a recognized accredited college or university and complete the application requirements.

Before enrolling, please check with your school corporation and dual credit provider to ensure that the course you have selected will be recognized for the credential you need.

Here are the courses available to teachers for Summer 2018:

Math and Computer Science Courses

IT 502 Introduction to Programming: A first course in problem-solving through algorithm development and analysis and software design. Students design and write elementary and intermediate sized programs, including intensive study of Java or other programming language(s) of similar scale and complexity. An introduction to the best practices for professional/ industry grade programming in included. On Campus or Online Full Summer
IT 510 Introduction to Information Technology: Reviews the academic discipline of IT, including pervasive IT themes, IT history, organizational issues, and relationship of IT to other computing disciplines. This also includes practicum to illustrate the nature of platforms and technologies currently employed in industry. On Campus or Online Full Summer
IT 540 Web Programming: An introduction to web technology covering a number of specific systems such as html, php, SQL, JavaScript, and XML. A laboratory component provides hands-on experience. Prerequisite: IT 502 Online Summer 1
IT 603 Information Management: Builds a deeper understanding of how databases work, including the topics of database theory and architecture, data modeling, normalization, query languages, security, and web applications. May be repeated more than once when topics differ. Prerequisite: IT 502. Online Full Summer or Summer 2
Math 521 Math Models of Infectious Diseases: An application of mathematical methods and concepts to the study of infectious diseases. Analysis of outbreaks and control methods (such as vaccinations) using differential equations and elementary matrix algebra. Prerequisites: MATH 131 and one of MATH 140, MATH 240, or PSY 201. Online Summer 1
Math 523 Game Theory: The fundamentals of tame theory are covered including dominance, Nash equilibria, and evolutionarily stable solutions. Various models of strategic games are explored and applications to economics, biology, and other disciplines are discussed. On Campus Summer 1

Certain courses completed within STEM Teach qualify to be applied towards a certificate in IT Fundamentals. Before enrolling, please check with your school corporation and dual credit provider to ensure that the course you have selected will be recognized for the credential you need.

The $1,950 value for a 3-credit course is made possible by a grant from the Indiana Commission on Higher Education and a scholarship from Valparaiso University. The tuition balance after Valpo’s scholarship can be 100% reimbursed to qualified teachers who are eligible to take selected courses at Valpo as part of the Hoosier STEM Academy consortium. Teachers will pay the balance and upon completion of a course with a grade of C or better, the Hoosier STEM Academy will send a stipend of $1,375 to each participant. Teachers are responsible for the part-time general student fee of $131 for each semester of enrollment. No general fee is charged for summer courses.

2. Academic transcripts from all college coursework completed to grad@valpo.edu. Unofficial transcripts are accepted but official copies must be submitted prior to beginning classes.

3. A letter from your school principal that supports your participation in graduate education at Valpo and attests that your school is either an underserved school or a school experiencing a STEM teacher shortage.

To enroll for Summer 2019, application requirements must be submitted by, May 15 at 5 pm CST. This will allow sufficient time for processing class registration by the first day of classes on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.
