The Study Abroad Process
Most students will begin by browsing and researching programs online, talking with Study Abroad students at tabling events, seeing a Study Abroad staff member present in one of their classes, chatting with students who have done it already, or simply stopping into the OIP – Study Abroad to learn more. Students are welcome to make an appointment with a staff member at any time and as often as they’d like. They are also strongly encouraged to work with their academic advisor to determine how study abroad will fit into their degree plan.
Once the student has chosen their program, they begin the online application. For most spring semester programs, the deadline will be Oct. 1. For most spring break programs, the deadline will be Oct. 1. For most academic year, fall semester, and summer programs, the deadline will be March 1. Some programs may have earlier deadlines. Each program’s specific deadline will be available on the program page.
After the application deadline, all applications are reviewed by Study Abroad staff and appropriate faculty/staff on campus. Students are notified of a decision about their application within two weeks of the application deadline. Students are then given the opportunity to commit or decline their participation in the program.
Once accepted, they will be required to submit more specific, detailed information that will be necessary for Study Abroad staff as they work to move things forward. Students will also participate in mandatory pre-departure orientations.
While abroad, students are encouraged to stay in contact with the OIP -Study Abroad as any questions or concerns arise or to share how things are going.
After students’ return, the OIP – Study Abroad works with other departments on campus to process transcripts and grades as applicable. The OIP – Study Abroad also provides re-entry programming to assist students with returning to the U.S. and Valpo and to help them practice marketing their experience to future employers.
The OIP – Study Abroad is committed to supporting students throughout the study abroad journey, including before, during, and after their experience. Students, as well as parents and families, are welcome to contact Study Abroad with any questions or concerns.
